Lessons for adult string players
Private violin coaching shaped for grown schedules—clear technique, honest pacing, and practice plans that survive a busy week in Minneapolis.
Lessons at Stumpier Pigeon Strings are one-to-one by default. We teach adults who are beginning the violin, returning after a long pause, or refining tone and intonation at an intermediate level. The studio is not organized around youth ensembles or kids-first recital seasons.
Each session mixes listening, short demonstrations, and hands-on adjustments. You leave with a small set of priorities—usually one technical focus and one musical phrase—so home practice does not sprawl into a dozen unfinished goals.
Formats we offer
- Weekly private (45 or 60 minutes) Steady coaching for adults building or rebuilding a practice habit. Best if you can protect two or three short home sessions between visits.
- Biweekly private Useful when travel or workload is uneven. We lengthen the written plan so the gap between lessons still has structure.
- Technique intensives Occasional longer blocks focused on bow contact, shifting, or vibrato foundations when you have a free Saturday morning.
What beginners can expect
Adult beginners get a calm introduction to posture, bow hold, and first-position reading. We avoid rushing into showpieces. Early repertoire stays short so your ear and hands learn together. Questions are welcome; embarrassment is not part of the method.
Returning and intermediate players
If you played years ago, we inventory what still works and what needs rebuilding—often bow speed, left-hand release, and intonation frames. Intermediate students dig into tone color, musical phrasing, and repertoire that matches chamber or solo goals without pretending every week is an audition.
Instruments and materials
Bring your own violin if you have one. We can advise on rental shops in the Twin Cities and on basic setup (strings, bridge height, shoulder rest fit) without selling gear in-house. Sheet music suggestions are shared as titles and editions; purchase through your preferred retailer.
